The Once and Future Citizens Conference provides an inspiring opportunity for students to understand and effectively implement their power as citizens. Even people who are too young to vote are nonetheless valued members of our pluralistic society; they constitute part of the “We the People” who are saluted in our Constitution’s opening words, as wielding sovereign power in our democratic republic. As the Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled, even very young students are entitled to fundamental constitutional rights, including freedom of thought and expression. There have been countless examples, throughout U.S. history, of young people effectively standing up for not only their own rights, but also those of other people. By educating and empowering students, this important Conference therefore will benefit not only the participating students themselves, but also all the rest of us.
This is the right topic, the right moment, and the right team. Justin and his colleagues are better qualified than any young people I know to facilitate such an important conference. I'll be there on November 16th!
